Turning climate change education into an engaging and interactive experience, BrandXR partnered with the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center to create "Find Tahoe Tessie", an augmented reality (AR) mobile app. This immersive app, aimed at 3rd to 5th graders, uses the mythical creature of Lake Tahoe’s Tahoe Tessie, to guide users on a digital adventure highlighting the impacts of climate change on freshwater ecosystems.

The Story of UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center is a globally recognized institution dedicated to studying and preserving the unique ecology of Lake Tahoe. The Center sought a creative solution to make climate change education more interactive and accessible, especially to younger audiences.


Despite the center's intensive research efforts, they faced challenges in disseminating their findings and raising awareness about climate change impacts in an engaging and digestible way for young students. Recognizing the potential of AR to transform education, the UC Davis team saw BrandXR as a perfect partner due to their innovative AR solutions.


The Solution

Working with extensive design documents the UC Davis team had put together outlining their goals of the project, BrandXR worked together with the UC Davis TERC science team to develop "Find Tahoe Tessie", an AR game that transforms users into scientists, taking them on a journey around Lake Tahoe to explore its unique environment, find virtual scientific tools, and learn about the effects of climate change on Tahoe Tessie and other aquatic organisms.


Not all fun and games!

The two practical challenges that UC Davis TERC had was their science center is focused on Lake Tahoe however the lake is 72 miles around and exists in two different states and multiple communities but the science center is only in one location. And on top of that the science is always changing, and building physical exhibits, info stations, printing and maintaining signage cost a lot of money and are not easily updated.


Using the BrandXR AR mobile application “Find Tahoe Tessie” the UC Davis team was able to create solutions to these challenges and add a few more perks using 3D and augmented technologies:

  • Created a virtual science center that encourages people to travel around the lake through gamification increasing the amount of people who can be reached.
  • Using BrandXR Studio the educational information in the AR game is able to be updated to keep up to date with the science as it changes.
  • Enabling advanced science education that normally only happens behind the scenes by allowing users to learn about and use 3D scientific tools.
