Success Stories: Augmented Reality Murals That Made History
Introduction to Augmented Reality (AR) Murals
What are AR Murals?
Ever seen a wall painting come to life? No, it’s not magic—it’s the wonder of Augmented Reality (AR) murals. These are large-scale artworks, painted on walls, which, when viewed through an AR app, transform into interactive, animated experiences.
Why are AR Murals Revolutionary?
Imagine the Mona Lisa winking at you, or the Scream actually screaming? That's the magic of AR murals. By blending the tactile feel of paint and brush with the dynamic capabilities of AR, artists are redefining public art.
Iconic AR Murals that Shaped the Landscape
Mural 1: Award-Winning Orlando Game Space Augmented Reality Mural by Electrifly
Background & Inspiration
The Orlando Gamespace now OMG Labs is a community co-working space that's focused on helping Orlando's world-class modeling and simulation companies, AR/VR/XR companies, defense and gaming industries. The mural painted by Chaya Av is of a girl trying VR for the first time and her mind is exploding with all of the possibilities of VR technology - with spaceships and rockets to game controllers and coins!
Once you scan the mural with the Electrifly App over 20 interactive elements pop out of the wall and come to life. Then you can tap on each element to interact with it - tap the rocket to send it blasting off across the mural and collect all the coins!
For the launch party we enlisted expert projection mapper Jesse James Allen to help us add another layer of immersion and interactivity. The combination of projection mapping with the interactive AR experience was what made this AR mural stand out and earned it a Gold Telly Award.
Impact on the Community
This wasn't just a mural. It was a celebration of AR/VR and gaming culture, making the mural come alive with animations and gameplay, and turning a simple walk into an immersive experience.
